Laurence und Temeraire stolpern von einem Abenteuer ins nächste und der Roman enthält zahlreiche packende Wendungen.Die Figuren in CRUCIBLE OF GOLD haben mir ebenfalls gut gefallen. Laurence kämpft wie schon erwähnt des Öfteren mit seinem Gewissen und ist nach wie vor eine sehr sympathische Hauptfigur. Temeraire ist sich im Grunde treu geblieben und die Begegnung mit den Drachen der Inkas erweitert seinen Horizont auf eine interessante Weise. Natürlich gibt es in CRUCIBLE OF GOLD auch ein freudiges Wiedersehen mit Iskierka, Granby, Roland, Riley, Demane und vielen anderen alten Bekannten. Auch die neuen Charaktere haben mir gut gefallen.Das Reich der Inkas mit seiner Kultur und seinen Bewohnern hat mir ebenfalls gut gefallen. Naomi Novik baut hier ein neues, interessantes Puzzlestück in ihren Weltenentwurf ein.Alles in allem ist CRUCIBLE OF GOLD ein spannendes und befriedigendes neues Abenteuer im Temeraire-Universum. Ich freue mich bereits auf BLOOD OF TYRANTS, den vorletzten Teil der Saga, der im August 2013 erscheinen soll. Sehr empfehlenswert!
This was another great book in the series. With adventures, new interesting cultures (dragon and human), lovable characters...I loved those moments when Temeraire commented on what was going on in such a cute and funny way. There were quite a few moments when I had to laugh out loud.
As all the others a vivid and lovely story. Unfortuantely the hardware does not meet the quality of the writing by far. The pages are not not equal in width costing a star. Maybe this is a bit hard but I cannot half star it.
Great new Temeraire book, with interesting and unpredicted twists and turns.Word of warning, do not beginn in the evening. It is an absolut page turner, I couldn't put it down.
I had stopped reading the Temeraire books after Tongues of Serpents, as I felt that the series had lost direction, travelling hither and yon to no apparent purpose. But when I recently reread the first three books of the series and enjoyed them so much that I thought it was time to give Crucible of Gold, the seventh book in the series, a try.Rereading the first three books also made me notice that large parts of the earlier books were also about travels (with the notable exception of the first and fifth book). Reading Crucible of Gold I was therefore not really surprised that this, too, includes a considerable sections in which travelling is to the forefront of the storytelling. There is again a new continent and a new culture to be explored. I do not really complain, but cannot help a wistful wish that the characters would be given the chance to really sink their teeth into a problem, instead of just sort of nibbling on it and then moving off to some new adventure. That said, I enjoyed reading Crucible of Gold. The characters are interesting and likable. Action, adventure, and interesting places ensure that there never is a dull moment. I particularly enjoy the alternative history/world that Ms Novik has invented.Having travelled along with Temeraire and Laurence so far, I'll certainly will continue this journey. (Where to next? North America is still unexplored.) I only hope that in the last book of the series, which I understand will be published next year, Temeraire and Laurence will return to Europe and help bring the Napoleonic Wars to a victorious conclusion.
